I'm going through QuranFlow and just doing a usability and design audit. Right at the beginning when I'm getting to just downloading the app, I'm noticing that these screenshots are horrible. Just on the app store, we need to update these and make them look better.
Okay, so right on the home screen, I'm noticing that I really like how it has the live sessions right there. It makes me feel like everything is current and valid. But yeah, I mean these 3D icons are okay, but they do immediately tell me what to do, and I can tell if it's an older person. It would really help them differentiate on what this is. I think what is confusing is the timer in terms of what the numbers mean. Like, it's a second, minutes, hours, and days. But I think just the UI of that could be a lot better. The live session also looks good. I'm just wondering with the light text on yellow background how that works for colorblind people if it's accessible and safe. Also, the "Your upcoming home" text is a bit redundant, right? Other than that, I think the menus across the top are good. I mean, iOS standard is for them to be on the bottom, but I don't understand what that top left thing is. The QuranFlow icon looks a little bit too small, but 4% I wonder what that means, and what is this? "Conversations" - is it a general question, a tech issue? It almost looks like these are personal messages that people are complaining about in conversations, but it's a bit confusing. Is it to the TAs, or what? Who's who, and what is this about? It almost seems like a generic message board. I feel like this is almost just like a generic FAQ or update. A lot of these things could just be handled with a good direct place for FAQs or to ask questions. Don't know about conversations. Also on the home page, the placing of the conversations is really strange. It has a button and a separate talking bubble next to it. Those look like two different elements, when it's really just one redundant.
So when I press Lessons, I notice a little loading screen comes up in between. I mean, I guess it's okay, but that seems really outdated, like 10 years ago. Nowadays, things just load properly, they pre-cache. There really shouldn't be an issue for something like this. Okay, I do like how simple it is, and it tells me exactly what's completed. The green color with the check mark is nice. I know immediately that I'm supposed to go into lesson 2. That doesn't tell me what we're covering (week 1, week 2), or lesson 1, lesson 2, what the date is, what the schedule is, what I'm supposed to do, or anything else. But I mean, in terms of simplicity, yeah, absolutely. Is there just one thing to do with no explanation why? I mean, I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. I'm just pointing it out.
Okay, so this is huge. I clicked into the lesson, and the first thing is I'm trying to watch the video, which is a stretch followed by the rest on the strong sign, and it keeps on pausing. It cannot play. I have no idea what player we're doing if it's using a variable bit rate or not. When I go into the settings, I can see it's 1080p and the speed is normal, and the selection is auto. But I don't know if this doesn't feel like a native player from Apple. The subtitles are there (that's good, we have that functionality), but it's a struggle to do full screen, which is what I wanted. Like if you're older, you have to do two steps with a very small screen in the corner to be able to get access. It really should be one touch, and the size is a bit off. This is a strange player, I'll be honest, and it feels like we're not using the full width to be able to access things. I mean, this feedback is like 50/50. I mean, there's just a little bit of padding on the side, but still.
We need proper thumbnails on the videos. I understand that we used the titles that are there, but the thumbnails should also be pretty self-explanatory.
Okay, I just saw something which is that at the end of the level of the lesson, there's a button to mark complete. So once you press mark complete, you go back and you can't unmark it. As a general design principle, you should be able to undo almost anything that you're doing, unless it's really critical like a test. So, if you're just reviewing this and then you mark it, you should be able to unmark it. So, I think that's really important, that one should definitely be included.
So again I'm seeing like a conversation here at the bottom, and I don't really understand why that's so critical. It's like a primary action right at the bottom near your thumb. This doesn't really make sense to me, to be honest.
Okay, so now that I'm on the submission, and I'm looking at it, I see it's got level 4, and I understand that my only option is to submit the submission for lesson 2. I understand that, but what I'm wondering is, what happened to lesson 1? Why isn't it here? Why isn't it here? What did I get? What was the result of that? What is my feedback? Where is the feedback or what am I supposed to do? Okay, so I see there's a button called feedback, and that's awaiting feedback. So, I thought that was feedback that I give on the instructors, so yeah, that's interesting. I see there's two different levels now for level 4 and "feedback" awaiting feedback. That's really confusing to me, and I hope I captured that confusion.
Now when I click on the feedback, I guess the colours show the status of the feedback. It's nice how it does say "awaiting feedback," and then there's a clock icon indicating that it's something being processed. Then, I do get a message coming down from the top that says "thank you for your submission." It goes away pretty quickly, but it basically says 5 business days. 5 business days is quite a long time. I'm wondering if that's always the case or what our average return around time is. If we have a 90% turnaround time of 2-3 days, then maybe we can change that and put something more accurate that applies to everybody, and not just purely a worst-case scenario. It builds up a pretty negative impression right at first. It's kind of telling me that I shouldn't really bother doing anything for 5 business days.
Okay, so now it says submission number two. I'm thinking it should say week number two, just to use a proper thing. I do get it says remember you can only make two submissions per seven day period. I understand that's to avoid people rushing in. This feels a bit weird. The colors of this page are hideous, I mean this lime green gradient with the fonts and everything. Ready to start your submission focus. Now I do like how it has the name of the lesson there. I mean that's really important. Super stretch followed by a rest or a strong sign. So I mean that's good to see.
Okay, now this is a big problem because the font that we're using here is not the standard font that's on the mushafs, and that really makes a big difference. For it to look properly like it really should be the same as what's on the mushaf, we should have that option to choose. And it should be there clearly so that everybody has high-resolution phones these days. This is really important, I think this is one of the must-haves.
otherwise, I mean, it's pretty clear there's a back button; it's telling me what to do. There's a start recording button on the bottom. It doesn't tell me how many tries I have or anything else or how it works. I don't really know what the green dot is for, and it says 1. I don't know what that means. But generally, I guess I kind of know what to do
OK, so I really like how it gives you the option to review what you're doing and to re-record before you submit. And now, it's interesting. It says your submission has been submitted and allow two business days to receive your feedback. So, it contradicts the earlier message that we received
all right, so I've gone on to the live one now. It's a little bit disappointing that the live menu at the top is cut off. These menus seem to be a bit larger than they need to be. So, what I'm seeing here is that again, that time issue, but also it says 6 a.m. Friday. What time zone is that? I don't really know. Is it converted to my time zone or not? I think that's a big one. And then they seem to be in a completely different format. One has a timer in it, but the other one doesn't. When I click on them to say "not yet available," I don't know what that means. What does that mean? Is it like a training video or something before we get started that explains the rules for this? Because I don't really get how this works. And even when I click on that first one, it says "not yet available." So, at the second one, I only join when I want. But why can't you schedule it? I decide the ones that I want to join, and then that way, the instructor knows who's going to join. They have a bit of a thing on who to expect, and it would help us communicate. Also, I mean, I should be able to add it to my calendar, right? Because I'm not going to join all of them. So, if I'm adding it to my calendar, it would actually let me know if I can or if I cannot join, and what that time zone is. Yeah, I think on this live session, that's quite important. And then also, what are we going to cover in this live session? I mean, I do like how it says "ustaz Radwa," and it looks like everything is "ustaz Radwa," and then there are other ones as well. But it doesn't seem I can filter by the ustaz or who I want or anything else. I've got to scroll a bit, and then it's just the way this text is put is just absolutely hideous. Like, it's just constant text, no structure, no UI design to this at all. It's just all a solid single size and it's put there. Oh man, this is just really hideous
okay so on all of the screens there's a little progress circle with a percentage and if I click on that it takes me to your QR progress. Now number one it shouldn't say QR because this is Quran flow. This isn't a Quran revolution anymore but second of all these icons are all screwy. It's telling me nine percent I'm assuming they're telling me nine percent of level four. I don't know how many lessons there are in level four. I guess I'd have to go back and look at the submission schedule for the weeks right? So that's one thing so what does nine percent mean? I don't really know. I think if it just had a progress bar and so it's got a circle with a percent in the middle and it has a bar. With that I mean that's just completely redundant. I have no idea what these guys are doing. That's telling me zero zero quizzes completed two of seven lessons completed zero fifteen something shit. Okay that's good so that's telling me how much of each is to be done right? Um and then it has my progress it's telling me 100% 100% 100% but again nothing on the feedback nothing on how I did on those nothing there so I guess this is okay but man this is ugly and redundant. My notifications okay that's kind of good so it does say my notifications and then it says one submission was rejected please resubmit it but it doesn't tell me when that was when this message is from what this is in relation to which submission was rejected was it the one I just did was it the one two weeks ago was the one a month ago? I have no idea so again I think that's a fail like that one absolutely needs to be fixed I mean those notifications are just complete fail at this point now continuing at the very top so we looked at two of the things on the very top header there are two things left one is my user icon and if I click on that okay I can add a photo and then let's a few things and it says fill these fields if you want to change password so nothing on billing nothing on payment when my subscription cycle is my history what I've done before how did I do in the other levels my achievements I mean just like nothing that mean we should try to be getting more information too like Four and then thirty-five. I don't know what that means. Well, we... We don't even have category headings like of what that means. Is that my name? Like it says email, there's a phone number, but like there's nothing there. This screen is ridiculous. Yeah, wow. I mean this is a fail. So the screen needs a redo for sure. Okay now if I click on the very far left one I get a screen that actually has some information it's telling me I'm a level four student my name it tells me my T8 that's fantastic and that's nice to know but I would have never known otherwise unless I accidentally clicked on this so that's really funny .
now I've got a submenu and a logout. So, feedback, resource, recording, support, settings. These are all just the menus that are there, and logout. So, really, the only thing that this screen on the very left does is serve as a menu that also lets me log out to navigate. That's a bit weird. I mean, I think we should look at the design guidelines for this. This doesn't really make sense to me. So, yeah, I guess that about concludes it .
oh, so there is a support button, and I guess this is the only place that I see the support button, so I would have no idea how else to reach it because it's so well hidden. From that left menu, do I have a support available, or I can submit? There's the settings as well, on the notifications and the font. I mean, I didn't get this when I clicked on the user icon on the right that wasn't there. I can select the font, all right, so that's good, but unless there's a training or something, such a weird placement. How are we supposed to know to do this? Let me go back and check that the font actually changed if I go to resubmit my lesson. I have to go back to submissions, but already submitted it, I can't see it. The font did change into so much easier to read, so maybe in the first week, there should be some sort of a notification here on changing the font. That has to be part of the onboarding. I mean, there's still errors in this though it's not perfect, but it's definitely better than before.
okay, now I have screenshots of every single page. But right now, I can't give you all of those screenshots because there's a limit on how many images you can take at once. What I am going to do is I am going to give you the screenshot of the menu section and of the home screen, and that should let you understand the structure and basically taking into context the comments that I've made, the feedback that I've given. You should be able to determine which are the different screens and the structure and where they go. I want I have gone in largely the same format as there is and the flow, so you should be able to understand that and keep things in the same flow. So I'd like you to take all of this feedback above. Remember, this is going to be used to create updates and for product research and improvements, so you're going to very carefully look at the images first, and you're going to read all of the comments first. Then, you're basically going to put this into structure, it into a well-formed document with the feedback for each screen in the flow that's given. Consolidate it, put everything together. Imagine you're like an expert project manager, product manager who's doing this right. If there's a framework you want to use or that you recommend, let me know if there's anything else that you think could help us in doing this. If you have any questions or clarifications, or if you want to show me a draft and then ask me questions, that's fine as well. Let me know how you want to work through this. The end goal is that I would like to give you all of the images, and then we create a PowerPoint where we have the screenshot on the left side and the feedback on the right side. But this is too early for that right now. Just focus on putting everything together in a clear, consistent, comprehensive, but concise document. I want to make sure you don't miss anything in terms of the nuances, and that you understand it's a bit difficult because you can't see the screenshots, but I will give you those eventually . ultrathink
